Fly Fishing for Rainbow Trout and Bowfin in Iowa: Backwater Bows

There are plenty of fishing opportunities in Iowa, including lots of opportunities to pursue trout in Northeast Iowa. Stocked rainbow trout and wild brown trout are plentiful, and the scenery of Northeast Iowa is spectacular as well.

On the other hand, Iowa has some incredible native species that can be targeted with fly fishing gear. One of those native species is the bowfin (Amia calva). These are aggressive predators that frequent backwaters and slack areas along the Mississippi River drainage, and are great fly rod targets.

After making a game plan to target both rainbow trout and bowfin on a day trip, it was time to document the trip, which allowed the two-part series called “Backwater Bows” to come to fruition. Both parts of this series are available on YouTube now.

Be sure to reach out to us with any questions about targeting trout or native Iowa species like bowfin with artificial flies. All fish are unique and we appreciate them all, especially our native species.

Tight lines, hope to see you on the water.
